COLUMBIA, Mo. - The surprising seasons of Cor Jesu and Incarnate Word ended Saturday with runner-up finishes in the Missouri Class 4A and 3A tournaments at Rainbow Softball Center.
Blue Springs, which beat Cor Jesu in the 1996 Class 4A title game, scored two runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Chargers 2-1. In the Class 3A title game, Marshfield scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to come from behind against Incarnate Word, winning 3-2 in a matchup featuring two teams playing in their first championship game.
"At this point, all I can say is I lost to a great ballteam," said Cor Jesu coach Marianne Haberstroh, whose Chargers had a 21-game winning streak snapped and finished 26-4.
Cor Jesu scored in the first inning on an RBI double by Melissa VanVelkinburgh. Unfortunately for the Chargers, they also stranded the bases loaded.
Blue Springs left the bases loaded in the third inning but took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by Heather Maggard.
Incarnate Word was one of three teams from the Metro Womens Athletic Association, including Cor Jesu and

Lutheran South, in the semifinals.
IWA won 2-0 Friday over Lutheran South on a fifth-inning, two-run home run by Kerri Lamkin.
Incarnate Word (21-8) tied Marshfield 1-1 in the fourth inning Saturday on an RBI double by Michelle Smith.
The Red Knights took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning on another RBI hit from Smith. The infield hit scored Amy Thompson, who led off the inning with a single to center.
But Marshfield scored two runs in the top of the seventh on a hit and two errors.
Incarnate Word had runners at first and second with no outs in the seventh but failed to score.
